Speeding Biker Jailed Over Pedestrian Death After Ignoring Red Light

A reckless biker who smashed through a red light and killed a pedestrian has been locked up for over eight years.

Fatal Crash on Drakes Way

Darren Roberts, 22, of Redhouse Way, was riding his Yamaha XJ600 at almost double the 40mph speed limit on Drakes Way on January 31, 2022.

Ignoring the red traffic light, he struck 38-year-old Neil Sharp, who was crossing lawfully at a pedestrian crossing.

Despite valiant efforts from emergency services, Mr Sharp sadly died at the scene.

Dangerous Bike, Drugs Found at Crash Site

Wiltshire Police’s investigation uncovered shocking details.

  • Roberts’s bike had worn, underinflated tyres and was in a highly dangerous condition.
  • He was riding without insurance or the correct licence.
  • Class A drugs were discovered on him at the crash site.

Roberts was charged with death by dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

Sentenced at Swindon Crown Court

On May 6, 2025, Roberts was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court:

  • Six years and eight months for causing death by dangerous driving
  • Eighteen months for possession with intent to supply Class A drugs
  • Two months for common assault (to run concurrently)

His total jail time comes to eight years and four months behind bars.

“No Remorse” From Biker, Police Say

Investigating Officer PC Charlotte Sartin blasted Roberts’ attitude: “Roberts has shown no remorse for his actions that night and instead looked to blame Neil for the collision. Our thoughts remain with Neil’s family, who have endured this lengthy investigation with incredible dignity.”

The case highlights Wiltshire Police’s crackdown on the dreaded “Fatal Five” driving offences: speeding, drink/drug driving, mobile phone use, no seat belts, and careless or dangerous driving — the key killers on UK roads.

Community Demands Tougher Action

The crash has rocked Swindon, with locals calling for stronger enforcement against reckless drivers and riders.

Authorities urge everyone to drive responsibly and report dangerous road behaviour immediately.
