Rhys Hedges Sentenced Over Billy Ripley’s Death

A 17-year-old has been locked up for eight years after fatally stabbing 20-year-old Billy Ripley in a shocking East Sussex attack. Rhys Hedges, from Hellingly, was found guilty of manslaughter – cleared of murder – following a violent confrontation in Hailsham.

The sentencing took place at Lewes Crown Court on Friday, May 23, where reporting restrictions were lifted given Hedges’ age.

Emergency services rushed to the scene around 6:20 PM after reports of a stabbing. Billy was found with a single stab wound to the chest in an alleyway and was pronounced dead at the scene.

CCTV captured the tense confrontation between Billy and Hedges before the teen fled. He was arrested the same evening at a nearby address.

Police Speak Out on Knife Crime Tragedy

“Billy lost his life in the most tragic circumstances. Our thoughts remain with his family, who have shown immense strength through this incredibly difficult time,” said Detective Inspector Amanda Zinyama.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Loader, Sussex Police’s knife crime lead, added: “Even one knife on the streets is too many. Don’t carry weapons — it endangers lives.”
