Essex Police Crack Down on Partying Students at University of Essex
Essex Police have teamed up with the University of Essex at Colchester to crack down on students flouting COVID-19 rules. While most students are playing by the rules, a naughty few sparked a weekend blitz of fines and patrols.
Weekend Party Patrols Lead to Fines
- Friday: Seven students caught gathering in a university car park were slapped with £200 fines each.
- Saturday: Police busted two house parties on Albany Road, with eight people at each party fined.
- Also Saturday: Nine students caught mingling from different accommodations in a campus courtyard were handed fixed penalty notices.
Chief Inspector Warns Repeat Offenders Will Be Punished
“We have worked closely with the University of Essex to explain the rule of six to students. Our first approach is always to engage and explain,” said Chief Inspector Rob Huddleston, Colchester’s District Commander.
“But where people repeatedly flout the rules, enforcement action follows. Unfortunately, over the weekend, several groups ignored the guidance, attending gatherings and house parties.”
“We don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun, but everyone has a legal and ethical duty to stop virus spread, protect the NHS, communities, and each other. Those who persist in ignoring this can expect fines.”
“We want to see police focusing on protecting victims and catching criminals – so please follow the rules.”
University Pledges Safety, Backs Police Action
Vanessa Potter, Director of External Relations at the University of Essex, added:
“We’re proud most students are taking COVID regulations seriously. For the few who aren’t, we asked police to help manage the situation.”
“This isn’t about stopping fun, it’s about protecting students, staff, and the local community. We continue working closely with Essex Police to keep everyone safe.”
Fines and Penalties for Rule Breakers
- Fixed penalty notices of £200 for gatherings over six people.
- Pay within 28 days and the fine halves to £100.
- Fines double for repeat offenders.
- Organising unlawful gatherings can lead to a £10,000 fine.
Essex Police and the University of Essex are serious about stopping COVID-19 spread. Students, take note: party at your peril.
