Cop Duo Face-Off with Hammer-Wielding Maniac in Midnight Standoff
Threat in the Car Park
Just after midnight on September 17, 2020, PC Rykki Townsend and a fellow officer left Mansfield House Police Station only to spot a man lurking in the front car park. Decked out in a high-vis police jacket and black balaclava, the strange figure clutched a hammer and quickly approached PC Townsend, asking if he was a cop.
After confirming, the man flipped, launching death threats and refusing to let the officers leave. Trapped without protective gear or radios and with members of the public nearby, the officers found themselves in a tense stand-off.
Calm Under Hammer and Knife Threats
PC Townsend managed to jump into his patrol car and call 999 while the unnamed officer cautiously moved his vehicle into position, keeping the dangerous man in public view behind the station gates. But the threat escalated when the man pulled out a knife, warning he’d kill an officer and dump the body in a ditch.
Thanks to PC Townsend’s clear communication with control, the officer kept the man talking until backup arrived. Police later found the suspect carrying multiple knives.
Justice Served Behind Bars
The violent offender was charged and remanded for possession of offensive weapons. A court sentenced him to four years in prison after deeming him too dangerous for custody.
Adam Commons, Chair of the Leicestershire Police Federation, praised the officers: “Rykki and his colleague stayed calm and acted professionally in an extremely tough situation. Their quick action and bravery without PPE prevented what could have been a tragedy.”
Bravery Award Nominees
PC Townsend and his colleague will receive special recognition at the National Police Bravery Awards ceremony in London this July, celebrating their courage on that fateful night.
