Two Men Found Guilty of Rape in Brighton Teen Attack
Two men have been convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a vulnerable teenager in Brighton. The shocking attack unfolded late on June 2, 2021, after a member of the public spotted the distressed girl with the suspects.
Victim Found in Distress, Suspects Flee
Police say the victim was seen in the company of 36-year-old Ashley Lewis, formerly of Bromley, and 18-year-old Dylan Holden, from Brighton. Both men fled the scene after two members of the public intervened to help the girl get home safely.
CCTV Evidence and Charges
- CCTV showed Lewis and Holden leading the victim to Pavilion Gardens, where the rape occurred.
- Lewis was also caught on camera stealing the victim’s bag.
- Both men were arrested within days and charged.
Lewis faced charges including rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and theft. Holden was charged with rape, attempted rape, and two counts of sexual assault.
Guilty Verdicts and Court Dates
At Hove Crown Court on November 11, after a four-week trial, both men were found guilty on all charges except attempted rape. They remain in custody ahead of sentencing on January 5, 2023.
“Women and girls should be able to go about their lives without falling victim to predatory men,” Detective Constable Laura Pettitt said.
“I want to thank the victim for her bravery and strength throughout the investigation. Without her support, this prosecution would not have been possible, and these dangerous men would still be on the streets.
“Thanks also go to the members of the public whose quick action helped protect the victim and secure this conviction. Violence against women and girls will not be tolerated in Sussex. We will keep hunting perpetrators and working with the community to keep the county safe.”
