Two Cops Hospitalised After Huge Bromley Flat Blaze
Two police officers were rushed to hospital after a massive fire tore through two flats at St Mark’s Square, Bromley. The blaze broke out just after 9:50am on August 15, prompting a huge emergency response with around 80 firefighters and 12 fire engines battling the flames.
Officers Aid Evacuation, Suffer Smoke Inhalation
The brave officers from Bromley Police were among the first on the scene. They helped evacuate residents before the London Fire Brigade arrived. Both officers were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and later released from hospital the same day.
Electrical Fault Sparks Fire in High-Rise Flats
Investigations suggest the fire started due to an electrical fault in an extension lead on a balcony. The fire damaged a three-room flat on the 10th floor and half of another flat on the 11th floor. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. Two other residents were treated by London Ambulance Service and taken to the hospital.
Residents Fear For Safety After Second Fire in a Year
- The St Mark’s Square building is still recovering from a previous fire in July 2022 that damaged the roof and destroyed half a flat on the 15th floor.
- Resident Josh Cope, who lives just two floors below the latest fire, said: “I don’t want to live here, I’ve had enough… Part of me wonders if the building is safe.”
- He criticised the housing association, Moat Homes, for offering alternative accommodation far outside Bromley, making commuting a nightmare.
- Another resident, Paulin Ngon, slammed the lack of tighter safety inspections following last year’s blaze, calling it “frustrating” as this is the second major fire in just over a year.
Developers and Housing Association Promise Action
St Mark’s Square was developed by LandsecU+I and built by McLaren. A spokesperson assured residents that all safety systems performed correctly and repairs are underway to get people back in their homes ASAP.
Moat Homes pledged full support for displaced residents, working with Bromley Council and the London Fire Brigade to provide alternative housing and resources.
The London Fire Brigade will carry out a post-fire safety audit next week to tackle any ongoing concerns.
Fire Under Control by Nearly Noon
The fire was brought under control by 11:55am thanks to crews from Bromley, Beckenham, Woodside, and nearby stations working alongside emergency services to keep residents safe.
