Driver Fires at Police After Hijacking Lorry at Gunpoint
On 16 June 2020, armed cops rushed to Ridge Green after a lorry was reportedly stolen at gunpoint. They caught up with the stolen vehicle at Rivermead Industrial Estate in Westlea, where the driver, Howard Jones, opened fire on officers, hitting one in the face. Luckily, injuries were minor.
Armed Police Shoot Suspect in Leg
Jones was shot in the leg by an armed officer before being arrested. The gun? A gas-powered air pistol, which was seized at the scene. As police firearms were discharged, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an automatic investigation.
IOPC Clears Police of Wrongdoing
The IOPC has now wrapped up its probe, finding no criminal or misconduct issues with the officers involved. It also ruled out the need for any changes in police procedures.
Assistant Chief Constable Deb Smith said: “The armed officers who responded that evening showed bravery and professionalism during a fast-moving and potentially dangerous incident. Thanks to their restraint and quick-thinking, nobody, including Jones, was seriously injured.”
She added: “I know the people of Swindon will join me in thanking them for their dedicated public service.”
Officials Praise Wiltshire Police
Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson echoed the praise: “Everyone involved, especially the firearms officers, showed huge professionalism and are a credit to Wiltshire Police. I thank them for their service.”
Suspect Faces Heavy Charges
Jones has pleaded guilty to blackmail, possession of an imitation firearm, robbery, and assaulting two police officers. He is due to be sentenced later this month.
