Heroes Honoured for Brave Response to London Bridge Terror Attack

On Friday, 29 October, London’s Guildhall hosted a powerful ceremony recognising true bravery. Police officers from the Metropolitan, City of London, and British Transport forces joined acts of courage from members of the public who stepped up during the deadly 2019 London Bridge terror attack.

Police Commissioners Praise Courage Under Fire

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick and City of London Police Commissioner Ian Dyson handed out commendations to first responders and civilians alike. Cressida Dick said:

“It is right and proper that we have gathered to recognise the selfless acts of heroism by the public and our first responders, when in late 2019, the lives of two promising young people were violently taken in an act of terror.”

She described how the attack unfolded just before 2pm, with members of the public rushing in without hesitation to stop the assailant and help the wounded. Officers from the City of London and Metropolitan Police arrived fast, facing down a deadly threat with guts and determination.

“Our officers showed the very best of policing, putting their own lives at risk to protect the public and save lives. The bravery of all who confronted the attacker was nothing short of extraordinary.”

Remembering Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones

Despite the heroic efforts, the tragedy claimed the lives of Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones. Commissioner Dick paid tribute:

“While we celebrate remarkable feats, our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of Jack and Saskia, who were tragically killed that day.”

City of London Commissioner Ian Dyson echoed these words, highlighting the courage of those who administered first aid, tackled the attacker, and worked tirelessly through investigations and inquests.

“They will say, ‘I was just doing my job,’ but their actions are truly remarkable,” said Dyson. “I am extremely proud of everyone who has been commended.”

London on High Alert as Terror Threats Continue

Counter-terror operations in the UK are at record levels, with over 800 live investigations and 31 foiled plots since 2017 — many linked to London. Commissioner Dick reminded the public:

“The threat of terrorism is very real. We recently saw the tragic murder of Sir David Amess MP in Essex, a chilling reminder that vigilance is vital.”

She urged Londoners to trust their instincts and report anything suspicious. “Bravery has many forms. Reporting strange behaviour won’t ruin lives — it might save them.”

As the city moves forward from Covid restrictions, staying alert and supporting anti-terror efforts remains crucial to keeping London safe.
