John Ashton, Beverly Hills Cop Star, Dies Aged 76
John Ashton, best known as Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the hit Beverly Hills Cop films, has died aged 76 after a battle with cancer. The actor passed away peacefully at his Colorado home on September 26, his representative confirmed.
Iconic Role Alongside Eddie Murphy
Tributes have flooded in for Ashton, who became a household name starring with Eddie Murphy in the classic 1980s buddy cop franchise. He first appeared in the original Beverly Hills Cop in 1984 and returned for the 1987 sequel. Earlier this year, he reprised his role in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, thrilling fans once again.
Long and Varied Career
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Ashton launched his acting career after graduating from the University of Southern California’s School of Theatre. His first film role was as Sgt. Matthews in the 1973 horror movie The Psychopath.
He went on to appear in films like Honky Tonk Freeway, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, and Midnight Run alongside Robert De Niro. Other credits include Gone Baby Gone (2007) and Uncle John (2016). At the time of his passing, he had completed filming Hot Bath an’ a Stiff Drink 2, with another project, Hot Bath, Stiff Drink, an’ a Close Shave, in post-production.
Ashton also starred on TV shows like Hardball, Dallas, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Notably, he portrayed the father in the real-life kidnapping biopic I Know My First Name Is Steven.
