No Charges for Irish Rap Trio Kneecap Over Controversial Concert Clips
Irish rap group Kneecap will face no criminal charges after a Metropolitan Police probe into their 2023 and 2024 concert footage showing members calling for violence against UK politicians and backing banned terrorist groups.
Shocking Concert Footage Sparks Terror Probe
Videos surfaced where a performer shouts, “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.” Another clip from a November 2024 show featured chants of “Up Hamas, up Hezbollah.”
In response, the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command launched a full investigation in May 2025, following public complaints. The Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) reviewed the footage, resulting in one band member being interviewed under caution.
Crown Prosecution Service Says No To Charges
Despite the investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) found the evidence insufficient to meet the legal threshold for prosecution. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed:
“A thorough investigation has now been completed. No charges will be brought.”
Kneecap’s Political Edge Sparks Free Speech Debate
The Belfast-based group, known for fiery political lyrics and Irish republican themes, has long divided opinion. Their anti-establishment style has earned both praise and fierce criticism.
The decision not to prosecute is set to reopen arguments about the boundaries of free speech, political expression, and performance art, especially when controversial comments appear to endorse violence.
So far, Kneecap have stayed silent on the police announcement.
