London Police Strike Hard in Autumn Nights Operation – 835 Weapons Seized!
From 4 October to 14 November, London’s Met Police launched Operation Autumn Nights to tackle rising crime as nights draw in and the festive season approaches. The force went all out to catch dangerous offenders, ramp up patrols in crime hotspots, and keep the capital’s streets safe—especially for women and girls.
Massive Haul: Weapons, Vehicles, and Arrests
- 116 offenders referred to diversion schemes to cut reoffending
- 835 weapons seized, including 38 firearms
- 504 vehicles confiscated
- 568 arrests for violent and sexual offences
- 777 patrols in areas most affected by crime, focusing on protecting women and girls
Operation Pandilla: Cracking Down on Cross-Border Crime
The police also targeted criminals sneaking weapons and drugs into London via transport routes. Working with neighbouring forces, they arrested over 100 people and seized 18 more weapons. Using sophisticated ANPR tech, officers stopped offenders before they could bring crime to the capital’s streets.
Project Vigilant: Policing London’s Nighttime Streets
To tackle the scourge of violence against women and girls, the Met piloted Project Vigilant in Lambeth and Southwark. Teams patrolled busy night spots to spot and stop predatory offenders. Weekend boosts to town centre patrols and quick-response teams in hotspots helped maintain a strong police presence throughout the operation.
Commander Alex Murray, the Met’s violence lead, said: “We are dedicated to making London feel safe for everyone. Autumn Nights is our response to the usual uptick in violent crime this time of year, and the results show reductions in robbery and knife crime. We’re restoring public trust and working with communities to tackle violence together. No tip-off about knife crime is too small – it could save a life.”
Crime Rate Drops Amid Tough Policing
Data for 2021 up to October shows encouraging drops compared to 2019:
- Homicides down 7% (9 fewer victims)
- Knife crime down 32% (4,105 fewer offences)
- Knife crime with injury down 21% (718 fewer victims)
- Knife injuries under 25 (non-domestic abuse) down 28% (395 fewer victims)
- Personal robbery down 44% (13,453 fewer victims)
- Robbery involving knives down 35% (162 fewer victims)
- Gun crime down 36% (643 fewer offences)
- Lethal barrel discharges down 20% (44 fewer offences)
The Met is not resting on its laurels and vows to keep up the fight. Police chiefs say they’ll harness every tool to protect Londoners and keep streets safe in the months ahead.
