TV Legend Kay Mellor Dies Suddenly

TV writer and producer Kay Mellor has died suddenly, Rollem Productions announced with “profound sadness” on Sunday 15 May 2022. Mellor was best known for creating the hit ITV series Fat Friends, which launched the career of James Corden. Her work spanned comedy and drama, including acclaimed shows like The Syndicate, Girlfriends, and Band of Gold.

From Stage to Screen: A Storied Career

Mellor started her career writing plays before moving to TV, working on Coronation Street and creating the award-winning children’s drama Children’s Ward. She also penned BBC One’s women’s football drama Playing The Field and earned an OBE in 2010 for her contributions to television.

Fat Friends, which aired from 2000 to 2005, gave a young James Corden his first big break. The show also starred Ruth Jones, Sheridan Smith, and Alison Steadman, and remains a beloved British drama classic.

Tributes Pour In for a TV Icon

BBC’s Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore said:

“Kay was an outstanding writer and the creative force behind many of the nation’s best-loved television dramas. She wrote with such heart, humanity, humour and passion, with strong female characters often taking centre stage.”

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin tweeted:

“Just dreadful news & difficult to take in. Our voice of the North, she put working-class characters at the centre of her brilliant, compassionate, moving & funny stories. Such a loss.”

Sir Lenny Henry, who worked with Mellor on The Syndicate, said:

“I found her incredibly creative, funny and instinctive. She knew what she wanted and how to get the best from us as actors. She will be missed.”

Gavin and Stacey writer Ruth Jones called Mellor “a great mentor” and thanked her for a “massive turning point” in her career. Doctor Who and It’s A Sin writer Russell T Davies posted on Instagram, saying,

“I adored her. She taught me so much. And she was hilarious… I think of her always when I’m writing.”

Legacy of Groundbreaking Drama

Mellor’s ITV drama Band of Gold (1995-1997) broke new ground by exploring the lives of sex workers in Bradford battling police and gangsters. The show gave Hollywood star Samantha Morton one of her first major roles. The Syndicate, another of Mellor’s hits, follows different groups of lottery winners across four series, capturing the hopes and struggles of ordinary Brits.

“We have lost a phenomenal talent and a true luminary. We ask you to respect the privacy of Kay’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
