Altaf Hussain Arrested Over Hate Speech Probe
Altaf Hussain, the controversial leader linked to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Pakistan, was arrested today in north west London. The 60-something was taken into custody on suspicion of stirring up hate through speeches.
Hussain Held Under Serious Crime Act
The Met Police swooped on Hussain’s residence in north west London on Tuesday, 11 June. He’s suspected under Section 44 of the Serious Crime Act 2007 for encouraging or assisting criminal offences. Hussain is currently held at a south London police station under PACE detention rules.
Multiple Searches Underway
- Police are searching Hussain’s home in north west London.
- A separate commercial premises nearby is also being inspected by detectives.
Probe Centres on 2016 Hate Speech Broadcast
The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is leading the inquiry, focused on a speech Hussain made in August 2016 — alongside other broadcasts by the MQM figure. The investigation involves close liaison with Pakistani authorities as enquiries continue.
