Off-Duty PC’s Heroic Act on the M3

PC Jordan Janaway jumped into action while off-duty, saving a man’s life and risking her own safety on the M3 near Winchester. The brave officer, who’d only been on the force for a few months, spotted a shocking scene during her drive to work on November 14, 2020.

Chaos on the Motorway

As Jordan neared Winchester at 4 p.m., she saw a car parked dangerously in the hatched area next to the live motorway lane. A man frantically waved her down while another lay injured in the fast lane, forcing her to brake hard to avoid a deadly crash.

Without hesitation, she jumped out to help. The driver told her the injured man had suddenly stepped in front of his vehicle and was now bleeding from his head. Together, they dragged him to safety on the hard shoulder.

Violent Mental Health Crisis Turns Dangerous

Another motorist revealed the injured man had just attacked him with a hammer and had been fighting with others. PC Janaway spotted the hammer nearby and had to restrain the man when he tried to get up and move back into the live lane.

Shockingly, the attacker then tried to sexually assault PC Janaway. She fought back fiercely, holding him down until backup arrived to cuff the violent man, who had earlier assaulted his own father during a mental health crisis.

Bravery Recognised at National Awards

“Jordan demonstrated enormous bravery and integrity by stopping to assist while off-duty, at great risk to herself,” said Hampshire Police Federation Chair Zo Wakefield. “She almost certainly prevented the man’s death by removing him from the live carriageway and restraining him despite his size and strength.”

PC Janaway has been nominated for a National Police Bravery Award. She will be honoured at a London ceremony this July, celebrating officers across England and Wales who’ve shown outstanding courage on and off duty.
