Devastating Jersey Tower Block Explosion Kills at Least Three

A “very, very significant” explosion rocked a three-storey tower block in St Helier, Jersey, early Saturday morning, killing at least three people and leaving the building in ruins.

Catastrophe Strikes Haut du Mont on Pier Road

At around 4 a.m., emergency services rushed to Haut du Mont after reports of a massive blast. Police described the scene as “utter devastation” — the building had completely collapsed and “doesn’t even look like a building” anymore.

Residents had smelled gas the night before and alerted fire crews around 8.30 p.m. But nothing could prevent the tragic accident.

Emergency Services Battle Pockets of Fire Amid Danger

The fire, initially believed extinguished, reignited with “pockets of fire” discovered hours later. Police warned the site remained “highly unsafe,” slowing rescue efforts.

The South West Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Team is on site, alongside an Urban Search and Rescue Team from Hampshire & Isle of Wight 1 & Rescue Service. Their search is slow and methodical, with hopes to find those still missing.

At Least a Dozen Missing, Rescue Efforts to Continue for Days

  • Three confirmed dead, including one victim found at the scene
  • Two people hospitalised with minor injuries
  • Around a dozen reported missing after the blast

State of Jersey Police Chief Robin Smith stressed the operation would be “protracted,” likely lasting “days, if not weeks.” He urged the public to brace for a long, difficult ordeal.

Chief Minister Kristina Moore called it an “unimaginable tragedy” and praised the “resilience, skill and dedication” of emergency crews. She sent heartfelt condolences to the families affected and thanked all involved in the tireless overnight efforts.

Specially trained officers have been deployed to support victims and their families at Jersey Town Hall as the community grapples with the aftermath.

“This won’t be finished today,” said Mr Smith. The search and recovery will continue until everyone is accounted for.
