Man Taken to Hospital After Falling Ill Opening Suspicious Envelope in Farnborough
Commercial Building Evacuated Amid Chemical Scare
A busy Farnborough commercial building was hastily evacuated on Friday after a man fell seriously ill opening an envelope. Emergency crews swarmed Alexandra Road just before midday, sparking fears of a hazardous substance.
Police and firefighters arrived at 11.52am following reports of the man’s sudden illness. Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called to a commercial property in Alexandra Road after a man felt unwell opening an envelope.” Immediate evacuation was ordered, with nearby residents urged to keep windows shut while the scene was secured.
Victim Suffers Burns and Breathing Problems
South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) revealed the man likely inhaled fumes from the envelope’s contents. A spokesman said: “He experienced burning sensations in his hands and had difficulty breathing after opening the envelope.” Hazardous materials experts, paramedics, and emergency vehicles quickly responded.
The man, conscious but unwell, was rushed to Frimley Park Hospital for urgent treatment.
Witnesses Recall Intense Three-Hour Operation
Local worker Adam Jacobi said by 3pm the area had been cleared. “The incident seemed to involve something inside a package that affected a staff member,” he said. Nearby resident Matt Attfield, 43, from Aldershot, witnessed the drama unfold: “Police, firefighters, and ambulance teams arrived fast. A man in a hazmat suit escorted the patient away. It all looked very serious. I’d never seen anything like it before.”
The cause of the hazardous envelope remains under investigation as emergency teams continue their work.
