Dog Handler Hero Fighting for Life After Brixton Crush
A 23-year-old dog handler from Gravesend, named Gaby Hutchinson by a close family member, is clinging to life after being trampled at the Brixton Venue on Thursday night. Around 3,000 people forced their way through the front door, causing chaos and leaving Gaby critically injured.
Speaking from their home in Kent, the family revealed Gaby’s parents and partner are by her bedside. Medics have described her condition as “touch and go.” The young woman was simply doing her job when the horrific crush left her on life support.
Trampled and Unresponsive: A Tragic Turn
Only in her early twenties, Gaby was working as a dog handler to support her young family. She suffered a heart attack right at the scene after being crushed and left unresponsive for 30 minutes before help arrived. Currently in ICU at St Thomas’ Hospital, she remains in a coma with severe brain bleeding.
A family member said: “It’s been very touch and go. It’s possible she won’t pull through.” Doctors have warned of serious brain injury and discussed the grim possibility of switching off life support.
Police Speak Out on Brixton Disaster
Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, policing commander for Lambeth and Southwark, addressed the incident at Brixton Police Station. He said:
“Firstly, I’d like to extend my thoughts to all those affected by last night’s incident and those injured. Police were called to the O2 Academy on Stockwell Road at around 9:30 pm after reports of a large crowd forcing entry. London Ambulance Service" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">London Ambulance Service and Fire Brigade attended, finding multiple people with crush injuries.
He added officers performed first aid and CPR at the scene. Eight people were hospitalised with serious injuries.
Investigation Underway as Police Urge Witnesses to Come Forward
Detectives from Specialist Crime Command are leading an urgent probe, with cordons still in place. The police are examining social media footage and bodycam videos.
Colin Wingrove also confirmed:
- An incident involving an officer allegedly pushing a member of the public is under review.
- One person has been arrested for assaulting an officer.
- No police dogs or dog handlers were at the scene.
“London hosts thousands of events annually where police presence isn’t usual,” Wingrove said. “We were called last night and are working alongside partners to find out what caused this tragedy.”
The police will launch an online portal for witnesses. With 4,000 people present during the chaos, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward urgently.
