Brent Cross West Phone Snatch Thwarted by Off-Duty Cop
A man was arrested after a brazen attempted phone snatch on a train at Brent Cross West station on January 20. The grab went down just as the train doors were closing, says British Transport Police (BTP).
Off-Duty Metropolitan Police Officer Makes Daring Arrest
An off-duty Met officer caught the suspect red-handed, pinning him at the scene on robbery suspicion. But it got worse – the thug allegedly kicked a railway staff member in the stomach during the arrest, leading to an extra assault charge.
Part of a Huge Police Crackdown Across London
This arrest is one of 21 during a week-long blitz by London’s police forces cracking down on phone theft and robbery across the transport network.
- Ten suspects linked directly to phone theft or robbery were nabbed.
- On January 22, cops arrested another suspect connected to an attempted phone robbery between Wandsworth Common and Clapham Junction stations last December.
- Finsbury Park station saw the largest haul with 14 arrests, while a man was picked up at Seven Sisters station on January 21 for carrying a flick knife, drugs, and cash.
Separate to this, on January 23, three teens were arrested over the robbery of two phones and a jacket from a group of teenagers.
Police Step Up to Tackle Rail Crime
Chief Inspector Liam Kelly of BTP said: “The public’s safety is our number one priority, and we are working hard to detect and deter phone theft and robbery on the railway network.”
“Our increased operational activity, guided by enhanced intelligence work, has made the railway a hostile environment for offenders, which has seen rates of robbery decrease compared to last year.”
Kelly also confirmed that uniformed and plain-clothed officers will keep up the pressure as part of the anti-crime strategy across London’s trains.
