Man Sectioned After Explosive Chemicals Found in East Sussex
A 28-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after police discovered dangerous explosives at a property in St Leonards, East Sussex. The shocking find sparked a major emergency response and forced over 70 residents along the seafront to evacuate.
Bomb Squad Neutralises Chemicals with Controlled Burn
The hazardous chemicals were uncovered on Thursday, prompting authorities to seal off part of the A259 Marina. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams swung into action to safely desensitise the volatile substances.
Some of the chemicals posed a life-threatening risk, leading to a major incident declaration. The EOD team transferred the neutralised explosives to a skip for a controlled burn near the sea wall.
Officials also found more than 500 additional canisters. Thankfully, these are not believed to be explosive. Robots and bomb disposal officers in protective gear combed the property and surrounding areas searching for further hazards.
No Terror or Drug Links, Mental Health Issue Suspected
Sussex Police have firmly ruled out any terror connection or mass drug production link to the case, despite swirling social media rumours.
The arrested man faces suspicion of producing illegal substances and making explosives for unlawful use. However, he has now been sectioned under mental health laws.
Chief Inspector James Scott said: “From evidence gathered so far, there is no indication that the 28-year-old man intended to cause harm either to himself or anybody else. The scene is not safe until this search has been completed in full, and this will continue into tomorrow.”
70+ Residents Evacuated as Half Marathon in Jeopardy
A total of 73 residents remain displaced and are being supported at a rest centre in the Royal Victoria Hotel thanks to Hastings Borough Council.
The ongoing 100-metre cordon has cast a shadow over Sunday’s Hastings Half Marathon, which passes through the affected zone.
Race organisers said: “We do not want to cancel the race until the latest possible moment. Your safety, along with that of our supporters and volunteers, is our top priority. We appreciate your patience and support.”
Safety First: Area Remains Sealed Off
Police stress the area won’t reopen until it’s completely safe. They thanked residents for their patience during this complex and unsettling operation. No lift time for the cordon has been confirmed yet, but an update is expected soon.
