Maurice Walters Triumphs in BBC Radio 3 Carol Competition

Maurice Walters has stolen the spotlight as the ninth winner of BBC Radio 3’s annual Carol Competition. Out of nearly 1,000 entries, his winning carol captured listeners’ hearts and was performed live by the BBC Singers and pianist Richard Pearce, under the direction of Bob Chilcott.

From Self-Taught Musician to National Winner

Maurice, a classics teacher from york/" title="York" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">York, has loved music since childhood. Without formal training, he taught himself piano and sang in the St John’s College, Oxford choir. Now, he’s passed his passion on to his 11-year-old son, who helped shape the winning piece.

The Competition That Sparked a Christmas Classic

  • The contest kicked off in September, inviting all musical styles—from jazz and pop to gospel, folk, and classical.
  • Entries were accepted as either notated scores or smartphone recordings, making it accessible for all.
  • Six shortlisted carols set to Niall Campbell’s commissioned poem, The Winter’s Brightening, inspired by the warm glow of Christmas homes.

Star-Studded Judging Panel and Expert Arrangers

The shortlist was shaped by a panel led by Gareth Malone, famed for BBC’s The Choir and Pitch Battle. Fellow judges included BBC Music Ambassador Yolanda Brown, choir director Manvinder Rattan, Pembroke College’s Anna Lapwood, and ex-politician turned pianist Ed Balls. Finalists worked closely with arrangers Joanna and Alexander L’Estrange to perfect their choral arrangements.

Winner’s Reaction and Expert Praise

“I can’t quite believe I am the winner,” said Maurice Walters. “Music means so much to me. Having support from the judges and listeners is thrilling. Collaborating with the L’Estranges and BBC Singers to develop my carol has been amazing.”

Joanna and Alexander L’Estrange added, “Working with such talented amateur composers was a joy. The diversity and creativity of the entries show just how inspiring Christmas carols can be.”

Petroc Trelawny, host for the competition, said, “This year’s entries confirm the nation’s deep love of carols and the incredible talent among BBC Radio 3 listeners. Choosing a favourite was impossible, so it was fantastic to see listeners vote with such enthusiasm.”

Christmas Airplay and Where to Listen

Maurice’s carol will be broadcast on Christmas Day and throughout the festive season on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds. Tune in to hear the heartwarming new addition to the nation’s Christmas soundtrack.
