Tragic Death as Moped Collides with Police Car in Sutton
A moped rider has died after crashing into a marked police car in Sutton yesterday afternoon. The collision happened around 4:45 PM at the junction of Wrythe Lane and Erskine Road.
Emergency Response and Injuries
- London Ambulance Service and an Air Ambulance rushed to the scene.
- The male rider was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency efforts.
- Two police officers involved suffered minor injuries and were treated in hospital.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the moped was not being chased and the police car had no blue lights or sirens on at the time.
Investigation Underway as Road Remains Closed
The Directorate of Professional Standards has been notified. The case has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for further inquiry.
Police are actively investigating and Wrythe Lane remains closed as collision experts carry out their work.
Police Official Statement
“At approximately 16:45hrs on Monday, 17 June, a marked police car collided with a moped in Wrythe Lane, junction with Erskine Road, Sutton. London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. Despite their best efforts, the male rider died at the scene. Work is ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin.
Two police officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The moped was not being pursued by the police car, and blue lights and sirens were not in operation. Enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing. Road closures are still in place at the location.”
