Power Cut Chaos! Remote Shetland Island Loses All Communications
The remote Shetland Isles have been plunged into darkness with a total communication blackout. Phones, internet, and computers across the island have gone dead after a major outage. Authorities are scrambling to restore power and reassure local residents.
Complete Communication Collapse
Shetland Police confirmed that engineers are battling to reconnect the island to the mainland’s main line after a full outage.
“Phones, the internet, and computers are all inoperable,” police said. “Officers are patrolling the area and will update the public as soon as we have more information.”
Emergency Services Still Operational – But Caution Urged
Chief Inspector Jane Mackenzie spoke on BBC’s Good Morning Scotland, revealing a stepped-up police presence to reassure locals. She warned that while some phone lines and mobile networks are working, the situation remains patchy.
“999 lines are still operational. If you have an emergency, call 999 from any available landline or mobile phone first. If that fails, flag down a nearby emergency vehicle or go directly to a police station, hospital, fire station, or ambulance station,” Mackenzie urged.
Subsea Cable Hit
BT Group confirmed the outage stems from a break in a third-party subsea cable linking Shetland to mainland Scotland.
“Some phone, broadband, and mobile services are down due to the cable break. Our engineers are rerouting services via alternate routes and working to restore connections as soon as possible,” a BT spokesperson said.
The island’s lifeline has been severed, but islanders can rest assured help is on the way. Stay tuned for updates as crews race to fix the crisis.
