Fake riots frenzy hits Leeds: Police slam viral hoax
False claims spark unnecessary panic
Police and fact-checkers have crushed wild rumours of a riot tearing through Leeds. Social media posts falsely claimed large-scale unrest hit the city on Friday night, setting off alarm bells across the internet.
One viral post on X (formerly Twitter), shared by Margaret Walker, linked to a misleading chat suggesting fresh riots are sweeping the UK. But fact-checkers from Grok and trusted local news outlets confirm: there have been no riots in Leeds or anywhere else in the UK this April 2025.
Last riots rocked UK months ago
The most recent serious unrest was back in late July and early August 2024, after the tragic mass stabbing in Southport. Riots then scarred several places including London, Manchester, Rotherham, Belfast, and Southport. Misinformation and far-right agitation sparked chaos, resulting in over 1,280 arrests and special government crackdowns.
Since those events, calm has returned. West Yorkshire Police have confirmed no riot or similar incidents have occurred in Leeds this week.
Police warn: Stop spreading rumours
“We are aware of misinformation circulating online suggesting riots are currently taking place in Leeds. We can confirm that these reports are entirely false,” said a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson.
“We ask the public to be cautious about sharing unverified information, as it can cause unnecessary alarm and divert police resources.”
Some social media users tried to link peaceful protests in London’s Indian and Pakistani communities to supposed wider unrest, but police clarified these were non-violent demonstrations with no connection to Leeds or any other city’s safety.
