Bomb scare shuts down Brighton street after explosive found in home
Police lockdown Horton Road after bomb alert
A whole road in Brighton is still sealed off after cops found explosive materials inside a property. Officers from Sussex Police arrested a 30-year-old man just after 11.30am on Friday.
Specialist bomb disposal experts from the Royal Navy EOD team in Portsmouth have been rushed to the scene on Horton Road to make the property safe. A large police cordon remains firmly in place while they carry out their work.
Paramedics and bomb squad in full force
Emergency teams from South East Coast Ambulance’s HART unit are also at the scene. Several residents were evacuated as a precaution due to the severity of the threat.
Royal Engineers rocked up in full bomb suits and helmets, deploying a specialised remote-controlled robot to safely investigate the property and any suspicious devices.
Man held over explosive substance suspicion
“A man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose,” a Sussex Police spokesman said. “The incident has been protracted and started at 11.30am this morning.”
Officers were initially called after locals reported a strong smell of petrol wafting from the flat. Witnesses also claim a secondary device may be stored inside the man’s car.
