Peaceful Protests Sweep Devon and Cornwall with Zero Arrests
Devon and Cornwall Police chiefs have praised organisers and protesters for a string of peaceful demonstrations across Plymouth, Exeter, Truro, Newquay, and St Ives today. Despite concerns, the events passed without any serious public order issues and no arrests were made.
Police Work Closely with Protesters
Police worked hand-in-hand with organisers ahead of the protests to ensure compliance with COVID-19 regulations. Recent changes allow peaceful protests but only if safety measures are strictly followed to protect the public.
Chief Supt Matt Longman, the protest commander, said: “I’d like to thank the organisers and participants for sticking to the restrictions. Protesters engaged calmly and lawfully with officers, balancing their right to protest with public safety.”
Balancing Rights and Safety During a Pandemic
Longman acknowledged the challenge of policing protests during these unprecedented times. “We’re aiming to strike the right balance between the rights of protesters and protecting communities from COVID-19,” he added. “The virus remains a deadly threat and it’s vital everyone follows the rules.”
Public Urged to Keep Playing Their Part
As restrictions gradually ease, police urge the public to continue following guidelines to avoid undoing progress made so far in the fight against coronavirus.
With no arrests and peaceful scenes across the South West, Devon and Cornwall have shown how protests and public safety can go hand in hand.
