Police Crack Down on Crime to Protect Nottingham Tram Passengers

Nottingham’s tram network is getting a police makeover as officers team up with tram staff to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour head-on. The joint blitz aims to make tram rides safer and stress-free for everyone.

Officers Take to the Trams to Tackle Trouble

This week, officers from Nottinghamshire’s City West Operation Reacher team boarded trams and patrolled stops, cracking down on offenders. Nearly 100 troublemakers were confronted for fare dodging or abusing tram staff. All either paid their dues or left without incident.

A group of youngsters causing chaos were stopped and searched at Highbury Vale stop, with one 13-year-old arrested for suspected knife possession.

Chief Inspector Vows Zero Tolerance for Aggression

“We’re targeting those causing antisocial behaviour and making the tram unsafe,” said Chief Inspector Chris Pearson of Nottinghamshire Police.

“Our presence reassures genuine passengers and supports hardworking tram staff. Aggression or abuse will not be tolerated.”

“The tram remains one of the safest ways to travel in Nottingham, and we won’t let a few troublemakers ruin that.”

Tram Operators Praise Police Patrols

Julian Smedley, NET operations manager, welcomed the action: “We’re thrilled to support these police operations. Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of customers and staff.

“These patrols reinforce that the tram is one of the safest transport options. We won’t tolerate criminal behaviour and will work closely with police to catch anyone responsible.”

Protecting Nottingham’s Trams from Vandalism

The joint effort also targets costly damage to trams, ticket machines, card readers, and shelters. Officers and NET staff are making sure vandals face consequences while passengers enjoy a safer ride.
