London Braces for Spike in Street Robberies as Crowds Return
With lockdown restrictions easing, London streets are swelling with crowds again. That means trouble for unsuspecting pedestrians as street robbers seize the chance to strike.
Fast and Furious: Mopeds and E-Scooters Fuel Crime Surge
The Metropolitan Police have warned that robberies on mopeds and e-scooters are back in action, especially during the busy summer months. Thieves zip past their targets, snatching phones, wallets, and bags in seconds, often without even stopping.
“This crime was rife in 2017,” explains Detective Chief Superintendent Lee Hill, head of the Met’s Operation Venice. The unit was set up specifically to tackle these robberies and has steadily cut offence rates each year with targeted tactics.
Watch Out! High-Value Items in the Crosshairs
Robbers are now also eyeing high-end watches worn by pedestrians. Many victims have phones or valuables left carelessly on outdoor tables or visible in hand—prime targets for quick snatches.
The Met’s ‘Look Up and Look Out’ campaign urges Londoners to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings. “Too many people walk around glued to their phones,” Hill says. “We want everyone to enjoy the West End safely after such a long wait.”
Operation Venice Cranks Up Patrols to Tackle Crime Hotspots
Over the next two weeks, specially trained officers from Operation Venice and the Roads and Transport Policing Command will patrol key hotspots, focusing on peak times to catch crooks in the act.
“We want to send a clear message: theft WILL NOT be tolerated. Officers will be on motorcycles using specialist tactics to target offenders,” Hill warned.
Police Urge Public to Report Crimes Immediately
Victims and witnesses should call 999 for emergencies or 101 for non-urgent reports. “Many crimes are reported too late, after offenders have vanished,” Hill adds. Prompt reporting helps catch criminals faster.
