Met Police Launches New Career Route with Degree Apprenticeship
The Met is expanding fast and has unveiled fresh, exciting ways to join the force. Their new Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) officially recognises policing as a profession, giving recruits the vital skills and knowledge officers use daily on London’s streets.
Fresh Faces: From Athletes to Taxi Drivers
January saw 143 new constables join the Met, including an athlete, a taxi driver, and a prison officer. They start on a healthy £30,000 salary, stepping into a rewarding career protecting the capital.
Diversity is on the up. Over a third of recruits come from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, and half are women. The Met is making real headway to mirror London’s vibrant population.
PC Gurpreet Kaur, former student: “Becoming a police constable with the Met is an incredible opportunity to help the public and keep London safe. Policing can be tough, but it’s extremely rewarding – no two days are ever the same.”
Training on the Streets and in the Classroom
New officers kick off training at one of four London universities. They learn the history and culture of their future areas and the challenges local communities face. Alongside classroom work, recruits hit the streets with experienced officers.
The three-year programme covers topics like public protection, crime investigation, and community policing. Recruits also gain hands-on experience with specialist teams tackling violent crime, emergency response, and safer neighbourhoods.
PC Rachael Brown, ex-paramedic and mental health trauma manager, said: “From age nine, I knew I wanted to be a police officer and detective. The Met offers so many opportunities – I’m excited to challenge myself and see where this career takes me.”
Earn While You Learn – Degree and Career Progression
Recruits remain police officers from day one while studying in bursts at university. On completing the apprenticeship, they earn a BSc (Hons) in Professional Policing Practice and become fully confirmed constables.
With countless specialist roles available – from detective work to firearms and counter-terrorism – the career paths are diverse and full of opportunity.
Alex Walsh, Met’s Director of Learning, said: “This is an exciting time for our newest recruits. The apprenticeship offers a recognised degree and the chance to join a highly skilled force. We want to encourage more Londoners, especially from Black, Asian and minority communities, to consider policing as a career.”
