Wembley Incident: Police Defend Officers After Viral Footage Sparks Outrage

North West Area Commander Roy Smith has responded to explosive social media clips showing a dramatic clash between police and a man in Wembley on the morning of Wednesday, 22 July. The brief 30-second video doesn’t tell the full story, he insists.

What Really Happened?

  • Officers on routine patrol stopped a vehicle and detained the driver under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act – but he was not handcuffed.
  • The man pushed one officer in the chest and tried to grab another’s PAVA spray.
  • Police struggled with him on the ground amid a growing crowd, some filming the drama.
  • A Taser was deployed due to his aggressive behaviour.
  • The man was arrested for obstructing a search and assaulting emergency workers.
  • He was taken to Colindale Police Station and later released under investigation.

‘I Couldn’t Breathe’ Claims Addressed

At one point, the man can be heard in the footage saying he couldn’t breathe. Commander Smith said: “It’s unclear why he said that because he was resisting officers and communicating clearly. The officers followed their training and moved him onto his side to keep airways open.”

Officers Hurt But Committed to the Job

Two officers suffered minor injuries, with one needing hospital treatment after being spat in the eye. Roy Smith said: “Partial videos can spark concern, but after reviewing full footage and bodycam video, I believe these officers acted professionally and with restraint despite abuse and assault.”

“Officers need our support. They police our streets without fear or favour, upholding the law. When we get it wrong, we listen and learn. But where officers act lawfully and proportionately, their actions must be defended.”
