A total of 22 police officers and staff took part in Light the Lakes last Friday
Light the Lakes is an annual event organised by Surrey Police, which raises money for the Care of Police Survivors (COPS) – a charity which is dedicated to helping families of police officers who have lost their lives on duty.
The fundraising challenge involves climbing one of the Lake District’s peaks and lighting a blue flare or beacon overnight to remember fallen officers from the ‘thin blue line’.
The officers and staff braved high winds and rain to climb to the top of Green Crag, which is one of the 214 Wainwright peaks in the Cumbrian national park and rises to a height of more than 1,600 feet.
Chief Constable John Robins QPM DL, said:
“I am incredibly proud and grateful to all of the officers, staff and volunteers involved. Also with the officers on the challenge were some young volunteers, gaining valuable insight into personal responsibility and resilience in the outdoors. All of those involved did incredibly well.
“COPS is such a worthy charity, it provides the much-needed emotional and physical support to the families of those who have given their lives in serving our communities.”
Craig Nicholls QGM, Chair of West Yorkshire Police Federation, said:
“We were pleased to support and participate in this event and are very proud to support the amazing work of COPS.”
