Brighton Scores £600k Boost for Dangerous Road Safety Makeover
£600,000 Funding Secured for A2010 Safety Overhaul
Brighton and Hove City Council have bagged a hefty £600,000 from the government’s Department for Transport Safer Roads Fund. The cash will target the A2010 route from West Street to Old Shoreham Road, aiming to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
Key Streets Targeted for Upgrades
The improvements focus on vital spots known for heavy foot and vehicle traffic, including:
- Queens Road
- Surrey Street
- Terminus Road
- Buckingham Place
- Bath Street to Seven Dials roundabout
- Dyke Road to Old Shoreham Road junction
The council is chipping in another £60,000 plus £90,000 from Section 106 developer funds.
Major Junctions and Speed Limits Under the Microscope
The notorious Queen’s Road and North Road junction will see much-needed upgrades, including redesigned crossings, smarter traffic lights, and wider pavements to keep pedestrians safe.
Speed reduction measures and fresh signage might also hit Terminus Road as part of the wider improvements along the route.
Plans Aligned with City’s Active Travel Goals
This key route links Brighton Railway Station to the seafront and Churchill Square Shopping Centre – areas with heavy footfall and a high risk of serious injuries. The revamp ties into the council’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which pushes for better, safer active travel across the city.
Design work is already underway, with final plans set to go before the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee. If given the green light, work could kick off early next year.
