Call the Midwife Star Hints at Show’s Future
Helen George, who plays nurse Trixie Aylward in BBC’s hit drama Call the Midwife, has spilled the beans on what’s next for the long-running series. Speaking on the Graham Norton Show with Waitrose, she revealed the show is stepping into the swinging ’70s.
From 1950s East End to the 1970s
Since 2012, Call the Midwife has won hearts with poignant tales of midwifery in 1950s London, based on Jennifer Worth’s memoirs. Now, the show is set to evolve. Helen teased, “We’re going into the 70s, because I’ve just started wearing long collars and flared trousers.” Fans can expect a fresh new look and era in upcoming episodes.
Uncertain Future Despite Popularity
But it’s not all clear sailing. Helen admitted she’s unsure how long the show will continue, given its historical roots. “I don’t know is my honest answer. Whether it goes on to another life form, I don’t know,” she confessed.
Nevertheless, Call the Midwife is officially confirmed to air until 2026, with two more series and festive specials on the horizon. “They’re going to film again this summer and then next summer,” Helen revealed.
No Plans to Leave as Romance Brews
Rumours that Helen might quit to focus on theatre were swiftly shot down. When asked if Trixie is out the door, she said firmly, “No, no, not at all, I mean, the company is filming, ‘we’, the company are filming.”
On Trixie’s on-screen romance with Matthew, played by Olly Rix, Helen joked, “See how long that lasts.”
As fans eagerly await more tales from Nonnatus House, Call the Midwife continues to be a beloved staple on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
