Drama on Westminster Bridge as Man Threatens to Jump into Thames
Emergency services raced to Westminster Bridge tonight after reports of a person in the middle of a mental health crisis, threatening to jump into the River Thames.
Police and Rescue Teams Launch Major Response
At around 7:15 PM, police, paramedics, and specialist negotiators arrived on the scene. They found an individual in distress on the iconic bridge. The City of London Police swiftly shut Westminster Bridge in both directions to keep the public safe and give responders space to act.
The London Fire Brigade’s Rescue Boat was also on hand, working closely with mental health professionals to calm the situation and support the individual involved.
“We are currently responding to a mental health crisis on Westminster Bridge. Specialist officers are on the scene and engaging with the individual. We ask the public to avoid the area and thank everyone for their patience as we work to resolve this incident safely,” said a Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
Traffic Chaos Hits Central London
The closure has caused major tailbacks around Parliament Square, Lambeth Bridge, and the South Bank. Transport for London (TfL) warned drivers to steer clear and use alternative routes. Several bus routes normally crossing Westminster Bridge have been diverted, adding to travel headaches.
Witnesses reported a heavy emergency presence, with police cordons and paramedics standing by. One onlooker said, “It was quite distressing to see, but the police seemed very calm and were doing everything they could to help.”
Support and Awareness Crucial in Mental Health Crises
Mental health charities have urged the public to stay compassionate and aware when faced with such incidents.
