British Journalist Missing in Brazil for 10 Days: Family Desperate for Answers

The father of British journalist Charlotte Peet has spoken out with mounting worry as the search for his daughter enters its second week. Charlotte, 32, has been missing in Brazil since February 8, sparking fears for her safety.

Last Contact Made in São Paulo

Charlotte was last heard from ten days ago when she messaged a friend from São Paulo, saying she planned to travel to Rio de Janeiro but needed somewhere to stay. Since then, she has not replied to any messages, raising serious alarm.

Derek Peet, Charlotte’s father, revealed his daughter flew to Brazil without telling her family. “I wouldn’t say that it was normal,” he said. “There was something on her mind, obviously, otherwise she would have let us know. It’s very worrying, but I just don’t have any more to say. We’re just trying to pick up the pieces.”

Search Intensifies as Police Take Over Investigation

Charlotte’s friend in Rio grew concerned after months of no response and reported her missing. The family initially filed the missing person report in Rio de Janeiro, but it was later transferred to São Paulo police, where Charlotte was last believed to be.

Authorities confirmed Charlotte was last seen boarding a flight from London Gatwick Airport to São Paulo, but the trail has since gone cold.

The 5th Missing Persons Division of the State Department of Homicides and Personal Protection (DHPP) in São Paulo is now leading the investigation. Officials say they are actively following every lead in hope of finding the journalist.

Media Community and Family Rally for Charlotte

Charlotte is a seasoned journalist fluent in Portuguese, with nine years’ experience at major outlets including Al Jazeera, The Times, The Evening Standard, and the BBC World Service. She has been a respected freelance correspondent while living in Rio, also recognised as a Lonely Planet travel expert.

The Brazilian Foreign Press Association (ACIE) has urged authorities to step up the search efforts. ACIE President Edmar Figueiredo said, “We express our deep concern as well as solidarity with Charlotte’s family and friends and call on officials to intensify the hunt for her.”
