Vital Safety Advice to Avoid Disaster
- Only have your stove or boiler installed by a qualified expert, following manufacturer instructions and building regulations.
- Ensure a constant flow of fresh air and keep chimneys clean to reduce dangerous airborne particles—especially critical for those with respiratory issues.
- Install stoves on a fire-resistant base. Putting them directly on hardwood floors or carpets risks severe fire damage from the heat.
- Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood (aged around two years). Wet wood causes tar buildup, leading to chimney fires.
- Chimney cleaning is essential—remove creosote yearly to prevent chimney fires which can destroy homes and endanger lives.
- Clean chimneys at the end and at least once during the heating season. Regular inspections are a must.
- Don’t store logs or flammable materials next to the stove. Fires have started from logs touching hot stove surfaces.
- Teach children about fire risks and keep them away. Use a protective fireguard suited to your stove.
- Handle stoves with care when opening doors or adding fuel to avoid burns.
Stay smart and stay safe. Don’t let your cosy wood burner turn into a nightmare!
