Fire Alert for Wood Stove Owners After Blaze in Hastings

Anyone with a wood burning stove must be extra vigilant following a fire on 9 December 2022.

Fire Breaks Out on Old London Road

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service rushed to a property on Old London Road, Hastings, at 2.15pm after reports of a fire.

The blaze affected the lounge of a ground floor flat. Firefighters battled the flames using a hose reel, four breathing apparatus sets, and thermal imaging cameras.

Two residents required medical attention following the incident.

Vital Safety Advice to Avoid Disaster

  • Only have your stove or boiler installed by a qualified expert, following manufacturer instructions and building regulations.
  • Ensure a constant flow of fresh air and keep chimneys clean to reduce dangerous airborne particles—especially critical for those with respiratory issues.
  • Install stoves on a fire-resistant base. Putting them directly on hardwood floors or carpets risks severe fire damage from the heat.
  • Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood (aged around two years). Wet wood causes tar buildup, leading to chimney fires.
  • Chimney cleaning is essential—remove creosote yearly to prevent chimney fires which can destroy homes and endanger lives.
  • Clean chimneys at the end and at least once during the heating season. Regular inspections are a must.
  • Don’t store logs or flammable materials next to the stove. Fires have started from logs touching hot stove surfaces.
  • Teach children about fire risks and keep them away. Use a protective fireguard suited to your stove.
  • Handle stoves with care when opening doors or adding fuel to avoid burns.

Stay smart and stay safe. Don’t let your cosy wood burner turn into a nightmare!
