Liverpool’s Paul Quinn to Be the Voice of Eurovision with Claire Sweeney

Liverpool’s own Paul Quinn, 32, is set to co-present a special Scouse alternative commentary for the Eurovision Song Contest grand final. He’ll be joining beloved local star Claire Sweeney on BBC Radio Merseyside after winning a fierce talent search.

First-Ever Regional Accent Commentary for Eurovision

This historic twist marks the first time in Eurovision’s 67-year history that fans can hear the show narrated in the host city’s regional accent. Paul and Claire will bring a fresh, authentic Scouse flavour to the biggest singing contest on earth, airing live on Saturday 13 May 2023.

From Thousands of Auditions to the Voice of Eurovision

Paul earned the coveted gig after nearly 500 hopefuls auditioned during a seven-week campaign. BBC Radio Merseyside toured shopping centres across Liverpool and Merseyside, inviting the public to record 40-second demos in pop-up booths. His authentic Scouse tone and heartfelt passion, especially his connection to Ukraine—the rightful winner whose victory put Liverpool on the Eurovision map—wowed the judges.

“It’s brilliant and to have it here in Liverpool is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Paul. “People will remember when Paul Quinn was the Voice of Eurovision for BBC Radio Merseyside. It’s brilliant.”

Expert Judges Include Eurovision Alum Sonia and Radio Legend Phil Critchlow

The audition panel featured Sonia, the UK’s 1993 Eurovision performer, and Phil Critchlow, a broadcasting heavyweight and Radio Academy Fellow. They praised Paul’s genuine Scouse charm and his sincere storytelling.

Claire Sweeney ‘Can’t Wait’ for the Scouse Commentary

Liverpool star Claire Sweeney, famous for her role in Brookside and West End musicals like Chicago, said: “I am thrilled to be involved with Eurovision this year in Liverpool. The Scouse alternative commentary will be a fabulous addition. It’s going to be such fun, I can’t wait.”
