Portsmouth’s Community Learning Service Rated ‘GOOD’ by Ofsted
Portsmouth City Council’s Community Learning Service has scored a solid ‘GOOD’ in its latest Ofsted inspection. The full February review praised the adult and family learning programme for delivering top-quality courses to residents across the city.
Inclusive Courses That Work for Everyone
The service offers a wide range of courses designed for all kinds of learners. Some come for leisure, while others are aiming to boost their skills to return to work or pursue formal education. The learning also helps families get involved, with courses that support children’s education and community participation.
Top-Notch Facilities and Tutors
Inspectors singled out The Learning Place on Derby Road as a well-equipped, welcoming, and safe venue. Tutors received praise for their dedicated support and smart use of technology to make learning fun and effective.
Strong Leadership and Community Partnerships
Ofsted applauded the service’s “decisive and successful” management and its solid partnerships with employers, local schools, and community groups. The report highlighted how the programme builds learners’ confidence and skills, preparing them for better futures.
Cllr Luke Stubbs, cabinet member for community learning, said: “We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the strength of this service and the hard work that goes in to provide high quality courses and support. We’re particularly pleased that the report recognises our partnership work with many organisations in Portsmouth and the ability of the tutors and managers to support learners so that they can continue to make good progress in their learning.”
Alan Cufley, the city council director responsible for the service, added: “Adult and family learning brings huge benefits. It helps individuals gain new skills, qualifications, and employability. Plus, there are important social and well-being benefits – especially for vulnerable adults learning for enjoyment and personal fulfilment.”
