Legendary Metro Driver Richard Neesham Calls Time After 41 Years
Richard Neesham has waved a heartfelt goodbye to a career that spanned over four decades on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Starting as one of the first Metro drivers in 1981, Richard’s journey began shortly after the system launched and he’s been behind the wheel rain or shine ever since.
From Bus Driver to Metro Icon
Before joining the Metro, Richard spent ten years driving buses in Newcastle’s Fawdon area. In the early 1980s, he swapped the bus seat for the Metro cab, embracing a transport revolution that transformed how Tyneside travels.
“I started as a Metro driver when the network was new, and I have been there for over forty years,” said Richard. “It was an amazing time — like the London Underground arriving in Tyneside. I made a great career choice joining the Metro.”
Never Too Early, Never Too Late
Despite early 3am starts, even in the harshest winters, Richard remained unfazed. His passion never cooled, making hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of passenger journeys over his lifetime behind the controls.
“I love my job and I’m going to miss it a lot. After 41 years, I was quite emotional on my last day — the send-off from the team was brilliant,” he added. “I’m proud to be the oldest Metro driver still running trains at 75 years old.”
Richard also looks forward to retirement and quality time with family but says he’ll be back to check out the brand-new Metro trains rolling out next year.
Metro Pays Tribute to a True Professional
Metro Operations Director John Alexander praised Richard’s dedication, saying:
“Richard Neesham has provided outstanding service for 41 years. He is highly regarded and will be sorely missed.”
After half a century in public transport, Richard’s retirement marks the end of an era. Nexus and colleagues wish him a long and happy retirement after his incredible commitment to Tyneside’s Metro system.
