Rush to Replace Your Old Stamps Before They Become Worthless!
Say Goodbye to Paper Stamps in 2023
Royal Mail is ditching its traditional paper stamps. By January 31, 2023, all non-barcoded first and second class stamps will be invalid. They’re being axed as part of a major modernisation drive.
The new stamps come with unique barcodes that promise smoother operations and beefed-up security features. Fancy extras include festive designs celebrating British pantomime and cool digital perks. Scan your new coded stamps with the Royal Mail app and watch or share videos—Christmas shopping just got techy!
Which Stamps Are Going Out of Fashion?
- Non-barcoded first and second class “everyday” stamps
- Non-barcoded versions of Machin & Country definitive stamps
- Stamps without value indicators (like 1st Class Large Letter, 2nd Class Large Letter)
Important: Special edition stamps and Christmas stamps without barcodes remain valid, so no panic over your festive collection.
How to Swap Your Old Stamps for New Barcoded Ones
Don’t just toss your old stamps in the bin! Royal Mail offers a ‘Swap Out’ scheme to exchange paper stamps for the shiny new barcoded variety—but it’s not as simple as popping to the Post Office.
- Pick up or print a Swap Out form from the Royal Mail website or call customer service on 03457 740740
- Return your old stamps along with the form by post or at designated local delivery offices
- If your old stamps are worth less than £200, the swap is free
- For over £200, use Royal Mail’s bulk swap option and send your stamps via a secure service
Miss the January 31 Deadline? Beware!
Using invalid non-barcoded stamps after the deadline? Royal Mail will treat your mail as if it’s underpaid. Expect delays or your parcel bouncing back.
Once you send your swap form, Royal Mail aims to process your new stamps within seven working days—but that’s a target, not a guarantee.
Nick Landon, Royal Mail’s chief commercial officer, warns:
“Please check your kitchen drawers, wallets, and purses for older non-barcoded stamps and make sure you use them up by January 31, 2023. If you haven’t used them by then, make sure you swap them!”
Don’t get caught out with useless stamps this New Year—grab your old stash now and get swapping!
