UK COVID Death Toll Hits 19,507 as Daily Fatalities Soar

The UK recorded 768 new coronavirus deaths today, pushing the overall toll to a staggering 19,507.
- Deaths in hospital and lab-confirmed case numbers remain to be confirmed.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) combined England and Wales figures released today with Scotland and Northern Ireland’s numbers from yesterday.
Wales saw a sudden spike due to delayed reporting, with 84 retrospective deaths added that happened between 20 March and 22 April in one health board area, Public Health Wales revealed.
Scotland and Northern Ireland Update
- Scotland reported 64 new deaths today, bringing its total to 1,184.
- There are currently 141 COVID-19 patients in intensive care units in Scotland.
Scotland’s COVID Strain: Care Homes & Ambulance Calls
- On 23 April, 3,009 calls were made to NHS 111, including 364 to the Coronavirus Helpline.
- The Scottish Ambulance Service attended 1,489 calls, 327 suspected COVID-19 cases, transporting 205 patients to hospital.
- Hospital delays have dropped significantly to 600, beating NHS targets set for March and April.
- 516 adult care homes reported at least one suspected COVID-19 case; 384 currently suffer an outbreak as of 21 April.
- Cases in care homes stand at 2,445—an increase of 152 since yesterday.
- About 7,567 NHS staff are off work with COVID-related reasons, roughly 4.6% of the workforce.
- Since 5 March, 2,271 COVID-positive patients have been discharged from hospitals in Scotland, including a data update in Fife area (+54 discharges).
