Dartford Council cheers new Uber and Gemini Trains tie-up to revive Kent’s international rail links via Ebbsfleet International. This signals the return of cross-Channel trains to the county for the first time since Covid slammed the brakes on travel.
Route and Plans
- Route: London Stratford International → Ebbsfleet International → Paris & Brussels
- Operator: Gemini Trains
- Tech Partner: Uber (handles marketing and ticket sales through its app)
- Status: Planning underway with new trains set to be purchased
- Council Support: Dartford Council firmly on board
Ebbsfleet Eyes Europe Again
International services to Paris and Brussels via Ebbsfleet halted at the pandemic’s start. Now, the plan aims to reconnect Kent’s station and expand routes from London Stratford International— a first for European rail travel from there.
Council leader Jeremy Kite: “Kent is the gateway to Europe. It makes little sense to push passengers all the way to north London. Ebbsfleet’s platforms have stood empty for too long.”
Uber’s Ticket to the Rails
Uber won’t operate the trains but will manage ticket sales and marketing, mimicking the “Uber Boat” model on the Thames Clippers. Booking will be seamlessly integrated into the Uber app.
Andrew Brem, Uber UK General Manager: “We’re excited to collaborate with Gemini.”
Gemini Trains Promises Next-Level Rail Travel
The start-up plans to buy ten new trains, promising competitive fares, top comfort, and frequent services on this European route.
Adrian Quine, CEO of Gemini: “Innovation and value are at the heart of what we do.”
This push comes amid growing local demand to restore international train stops at Ebbsfleet and Ashford, which have been left sidelined since 2020.
What’s Next?
No official launch date yet, but the plans mark a serious move toward bringing international train travel back to Kent’s doorstep.
