Fire Rips Through Surbiton Home: Six Engines Battle Blaze
Firefighters raced to a fire on Ferguson Avenue, Surbiton, with six fire engines and 40 crew members tackling the fierce blaze.
Half the House Damaged, One Man Treated for Shock
The fire gutted half of the ground and first floors of a semi-detached home. One man was treated for shock by London Ambulance crews at the scene. Two women fled neighbouring houses before firefighters arrived.
Brand New Turntable Ladder Deployed
Wimbledon fire station sent its brand new 32-metre turntable ladder, which had just entered service earlier that same day.
Multiple Calls and Crucial Smoke Alarms Save Lives
London Fire Brigade’s 999 Control Officers received 11 calls about the fire. A working smoke alarm inside the house alerted residents, giving them crucial time to escape.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned: “Homes need multiple smoke alarms or you won’t be properly covered. Ideal spots for smoke alarms include rooms where you leave electrical equipment running like satellite boxes, computers or heaters; any room where you smoke, and anywhere you charge your mobile or laptop.
“You should also have a heat alarm in the kitchen and the bathroom. They should be tested regularly.”
Fire Under Control After Two Hours, Investigation Underway
The Brigade was called at 2:05pm and had the fire under control by 4:06pm. Crews from Kingston, Twickenham, Surbiton, and Wimbledon fire stations fought the blaze.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
