Jane Mallory Birkin, the legendary English-French singer and actress, has died aged 76. She was found dead at her home in Paris on July 16, 2023.

Born in London on December 14, 1946, Birkin first hit screens in the 1960s with roles in films like Blowup and Kaleidoscope. Her life changed forever in 1968 when she met French icon Serge Gainsbourg on the set of Slogan.
Their explosive musical and romantic partnership dominated the late 1960s and ’70s. Together, they released the album Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg in 1969. Birkin also made waves starring in the controversial Gainsbourg-directed film Je t’aime moi non plus (1976). Her acting credits also include Agatha Christie adaptations Death on the Nile (1978) and Evil Under the Sun (1982).
Solo Stardom and Lasting Legacy
After splitting from Gainsbourg in 1980, Birkin forged a successful career in music and film solo. She starred in the 1991 miniseries Red Fox and the 1998 drama A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries. Her final screen appearance was in the Oscar-nominated short La femme et le TGV (2016), which she called her farewell to acting.
Birkin’s influence stretched beyond entertainment. She is mother to three talented children: photographer Kate Barry, actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, and musician Lou Doillon. She also left a permanent mark on fashion—the legendary Hermès “Birkin bag” is named after her.

Jane Birkin’s talent earned her top honours, including Female Artist of the Year at the 1992 Victoires de la Musique. She received César Award nods for acting excellence in Je t’aime moi non plus and La Belle Noiseuse.
