Cop Jailed for Stealing Cash from Police Wallet
PC Mohammad Ghalayini, assigned to the North Area Command Unit, has been sentenced to 22 months behind bars at Southwark Crown Court. The disgraced officer was also slapped with a £3,000 costs order on Monday, 31 October.
Guilty of Theft and Perverting Justice
Ghalayini was found guilty on 29 September of stealing £80 from a wallet handed into police as lost property. The theft came to light when a Met employee reported the missing cash. In addition, he was convicted of perverting the course of justice.
Police Boss Condemns ‘Deceitful’ Behaviour
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, overseeing North Area policing in Haringey and Enfield, slammed Ghalayini’s actions:
“It is bitterly disappointing that an officer has acted in such a deceitful way. It is really important that people have more trust in us, but actions like this understandably undermine confidence in the police. Across the Met we are working to clear out those who corrupt us and let down the public.”
Investigation and Aftermath
PC Ghalayini was arrested on 24 March 2021 after an internal probe by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards. Charged on 25 October the same year, he first appeared at 1 Magistrates’ Court on 18 November 2021.
He remains suspended from duty as internal misconduct proceedings loom. The Met is determined to root out corruption and restore public trust.
