Chaos at Greatstone Beach: Police Injured in Covid Breach Brawl

Kent Police are probing a major disturbance at Greatstone beach after a packed gathering flouted Covid-19 rules. The force is urging the public to keep their distance and follow safety guidelines to stop the virus spreading further.

Huge Crowd Sparks Police Action

Officers were called around midday on Sunday, 9 August 2020, after reports of a large, pre-planned get-together at Greatstone beach. However, police were only informed of the exact spot as the crowd arrived, prompting a rapid response.

Throughout the day, patrols engaged with the group, reminding them of government guidelines and tackling reports of anti-social behaviour. Visitors were urged to think about their impact on the wider community and take personal responsibility to control Covid-19.

Violence Erupts as Officers Attacked

Trouble escalated around 9pm with an altercation in a nearby car park. Four officers were hurt during the scuffle and needed treatment at the scene by the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

A 29-year-old man from London was arrested in connection with the incident.

Deputy Commander Issues Stark Warning

“Our officers stayed on-site all day to ensure compliance,” said Superintendent Simon Thompson, Kent Police’s Deputy Area Commander for East Kent.

“While most people follow the rules, we won’t tolerate those who flout safety measures or cause anti-social behaviour.”

“Beaches and parks have been busier since lockdown eased, but spreading Covid-19 remains a real threat. Everyone must respect distancing rules and think of the local community.”

“Anyone planning large events should consider the consequences for residents and public safety.”

“We continue to investigate the altercation and urge witnesses to come forward.”

Witnesses Urged to Speak Up

Police ask anyone with information about the disturbance to call 01843 222289 and quote reference 09-0593.
