Young Woman Murdered After Visiting Workmate’s Home

23-year-old Megan Newborough vanished after visiting Ross McCullum at his Windsor Close home on the evening of Friday 6 August last year. She never returned. Her worried family in Nuneaton reported her missing to Warwickshire Police the following day.

Phone Tracking Leads Police to Grim Discovery

Megan’s family used a tracking app and spotted her phone in Hermitage Road, Whitwick. Police recovered the phone and arrested McCullum at Windsor Close on suspicion of kidnap. When asked about Megan’s whereabouts, McCullum shockingly confessed she was dead. He revealed her body was dumped in a remote spot on Charley Road, Woodhouse Eaves.

Officers rushed to the location and found Megan’s body beneath an overgrown hedgerow. McCullum was then charged with murder, and the case was handed over to the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU).

McCullum’s Chilling Confession

In a chilling police interview, 30-year-old McCullum admitted strangling Megan before slitting her throat. He described placing her body in the passenger seat of her car, disposing of her phone, and abandoning the vehicle later in Loughborough before returning home.

He initially denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Justice Served at Leicester Crown Court

After a lengthy trial, McCullum was convicted of Megan’s murder on Monday 12 December at Leicester Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Jenni Heggs, EMSOU: “My deepest condolences remain with Megan’s family. This trial has revealed the terrible events leading up to her death and McCullum’s attempts to cover it up. He has never given a full explanation for why he killed Megan, which has deepened her family’s pain. Megan was only 23, with her whole life ahead of her. I hope today’s verdict brings some closure to those who loved her.”
