Violent Burglar Busted After Wild Street Fight With Cops in Mansfield

Officers Spot Wanted Man in Mansfield

Police were called to Burns Street, Mansfield, just after 9.20pm on Thursday 10 September for an unrelated job when they spotted Grzegorz Wus. The 39-year-old was already wanted for breaching a court order.

Wus Goes Ballistic During Arrest

When officers tried to arrest him, Wus exploded. He pulled away violently, screaming at the top of his lungs. With his right wrist cuffed, he lashed out at a male officer, knocking them both over a nearby wall and onto the ground.

Despite the officer spraying Wus with irritant spray, the thug barely flinched. Things got even worse when a knife fell to the floor during the struggle. Worried for their safety, the officer fought hard to keep Wus away from the weapon.

Backup and Brave Civilian Help Pin Him Down

Wus, from Outram Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, was only detained after backup arrived — including a heroic member of the public who stepped in to help. The arresting officer suffered cuts and bruises to his face, arms, and hand during the scuffle.

Criminal Past Catches Up With Him

Wus later pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker, possessing class B drugs, going equipped to steal, and two burglaries in Mansfield. DNA linked him to both crimes:

  • On 9 August 2019, he stole electrical goods, food, and gardening items from Renfew Court after leaving behind an open bottle of water.
  • Between 28-31 December 2019, he burgled a Quarry Lane building site, leaving DNA on a cup of tea in the site cabin.

He was handed a 15-month prison sentence for his crimes.

Police Praise Officers and Public for Courage

Inspector Nick Butler, district commander for Mansfield, said: “Wus is a violent burglar with an obvious disregard for the law. On the day of the assault, my officers were simply doing their job — keeping people safe.

“They spotted Wus in the street and tried to arrest him after he failed to pass himself off as someone else. He launched a ferocious assault, putting officers at serious risk due to his size and strength.

“Thanks to the courage and professionalism of my officers, and a member of the public who stepped in, Wus is now behind bars.

“This serves as a reminder that assaulting police leads to severe consequences. We take burglaries seriously and will use every tool, including DNA evidence, to convict careless offenders.”
