Camberley Van Driver Jailed for Fatal Overtaking Crash
Aron Hicks, 28, from Mytchett Road, Camberley, Surrey, has been locked up for over three years after a deadly crash on a Surrey road. On Tuesday (13/6), Hicks pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court to causing the death of 78-year-old Brian Hunt.
Deadly Risky Overtake on A417
On the morning of May 4 last year, Hicks was behind the wheel of his white Ford Transit van, travelling along the A417 between Half Penny Lane and Aston Tirrold. After successfully overtaking one vehicle, he recklessly tried a second overtake on the brow of a hill – where visibility was severely limited.
That risky move ended in disaster. Hicks crashed head-on with Brian Hunt’s Honda Civic as they neared the hill’s crest. Mr Hunt later died in hospital from his injuries. Hicks suffered minor injuries when his van overturned.
Sentenced and Banned Behind the Wheel
Following a serious investigation, Hicks was charged on January 17 this year. The court handed him a prison sentence of three years and four months, plus a driving ban lasting three years and eight months.
Dash-Cam Footage Released at Family’s Request
“At the families’ request, we are releasing the footage of Hicks’ fatal decision that day,” said Senior Investigating Officer Sergeant Dom Mahon.
“Hicks was rushing that morning and decided to take a risk, which tragically cost Brian Hunt his life.”
“The shocking dash-cam footage shows clearly how impatient driving can be fatal.”
“My thoughts are with Mr Hunt’s family and friends, who have shown incredible patience and resolve during the investigation.”
The reckless act has devastated a family and left a lasting scar on the community. This tragic avoidable crash is a stark warning of the deadly dangers of impatience behind the wheel.
