Tragic Death of Toddler Left Alone for Six Days: New Review Released
The Brighton & Hove Safeguarding Children’s Partnership has published a heartbreaking review into the death of 20-month-old Asiah Kudi in December 2019.
Toddler Starved and Left Alone While Mother Partyed
Asiah was found dead in a Brighton flat after her mother, Verphy Kudi, went out to celebrate her 18th birthday. Court documents revealed Verphy left Asiah alone for nearly six days — 5 days, 21 hours, and 58 minutes — while she travelled to London and Coventry, behaving like a “carefree teenager.
At Lewes Crown Court, Verphy was sentenced to nine years for manslaughter. CCTV footage showed the horrifying extent of neglect.
Starvation, Influenza, and Neglect: The Cause of Death
A post-mortem confirmed Asiah died from starvation and influenza. She also showed severe dehydration and painful nappy rash, signs of serious neglect.
Officials Respond to Devastating Case and Review Findings
Deb Austin, Executive Director of Families, Children & Learning at Brighton & Hove City Council, expressed deep sorrow over the “extremely complex and enormously tragic” case.
“Today is a very difficult and sad day for many people as we are reminded again that a young life has been lost in awful circumstances. The review found none of the professionals involved could have predicted that Asiah’s mother would leave her 20-month-old daughter alone and ill for six days.”
“The report also highlights the high level of support and services provided to Asiah and her mother, with much good practice by practitioners.”
“Following the death of Asiah, we have strengthened multi-agency assessments before changing a child’s plan and updated guidance on cases involving children with social workers. We’re improving housing and supported accommodation for children.”
“Our thoughts are with Asiah and her family, and everyone affected by this tragic death.”
The inquest into Asiah’s death is scheduled for next year, with full participation from local authorities. Comments will be withheld until the process concludes.
