City of London Crackdown Nets Big Drug Haul and Stolen Goods in Uninsured Driving Sweep
Operation Drive Insured Hits Hard
A week-long blitz on uninsured motorists in the City of London has exposed serious criminal activity. Launched as Operation Drive Insured, the crackdown was led by the Targeted Intercept and Tactical ANPR Team (TITAN) working with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB).
Massive Cannabis Bust and Stolen Items Recovered
- £35,000 Worth of Cannabis Seized Officers stopped a car and found 3.5kg of cannabis hidden in the boot. The 29-year-old driver, disqualified, uninsured, and arrested for possession with intent to supply, had his vehicle impounded. He remains on conditional bail as investigations press on.
- Stolen Number Plates and Coke Found One motorist was caught without insurance or a valid licence. A search revealed stolen number plates and a disabled parking badge, stolen during a recent break-in. Tests showed he was under the influence of cocaine. He was arrested for handling stolen goods and the recovered possessions returned to their owners.
- Class A Drugs and Violence on the Streets Another uninsured driver was caught with 36 bags of Class A drugs concealed in his car. During arrest, he violently assaulted a police officer and now faces charges for drug possession with intent to supply and assaulting an emergency worker.
Operation Sees Eight Vehicles Seized
The crackdown resulted in eight uninsured vehicles being impounded and two significant drug-related cases emerging. Officers utilised Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and insurance databases to identify and stop unlawful drivers.
Police and MIB Speak Out
Chief Inspector Jo Cash from City of London Police declared: “Uninsured driving isn’t just a traffic offence; it often uncovers bigger crimes. Thanks to the MIB’s support, we’ve taken dangerous vehicles off our streets and seized illegal drugs.”
Martin Saunders, Head of Enforcement at MIB, added: “Uninsured drivers are frequently linked to secondary crimes and serious collisions. Operations like this are key to protecting all road users.”
Uninsured Vehicles a National Danger
So far this year, joint operations have seized 115,000 uninsured vehicles nationwide. Yet, an alarming estimated 300,000 uninsured cars still risk public safety on UK roads every day.
Public Urged to Check Insurance Now
Drivers are warned to double-check their insurance status and policies. Many wrongly assume comprehensive cover applies to all vehicles or forget to renew. For advice, visit mib.org.uk/driveinsured.
Crackdown Saves Lives
Uninsured drivers not only endanger themselves but are linked to crime and higher accident rates. With operations like Drive Insured, police and enforcement agencies are striking back to keep UK roads safer for all.
